Because it emphasizes the hustler aspect of steem, draws an entitled audience and decreases the fun part of it.

We already have that with sbi, and other programs who give upvotes when you use them.

Just giving them a 50 STEEM delegation to start out will be better.

If you want to support dPoll curation, you can also delegate some steem power. Quick steem connect links to delegate:

Basic income is a bad idea almost every time. A better curation system and onboarding influencers could be a beter strategy. Then the influencers can go on to vote and promote their fans.

A decent delegation would also help (like what @steemmonsters is doing to the payers) RC delegations can do a lot to help the new users too. But that will have to wait for some time.

If the users come here only to earn money, then they lose.
People should support each other, and they should not focus mainly on earning money, but to help build a community, and they should work together to give and earn money by giving and receiving upvotes.
After all Steemit is marketed as a social network website.
Selfishness and greed is a big problem for many Steemit users. A basic income would only increase that.
Luckily/fortunately the manual curation is increased since the initiation of the HardFork 21 (HF21), which is a good thing.
I curate more and I receive more upvotes.
Steemit is not necessarily need to increase the user base, but the number of active users. If anything, Steemit should give a decent Steem Power delegation (at least for a few months) to the new users to avoid them running out of Resource Credits (RC).

I feel it can't hurt to have something to help small/new users.

They do delegate to new users to allow them time to earn/buy their own STEEM. Rather or not it's enough is a different question.
