Many music artists do not stick to one sound even they're distinguished within a genre. It is their way to give a fresh sound, and somewhat trying something different for their fans. It's not like they're following the trend like many singers or bands do in order to sell records.
I know the formerly trio, now duo, TLC has innovated themselves in their music. Of course, they're always be that hip R&B group (or duo), but they had incorporated rock in some of their singles.
This song may have still been considered R&B, but you can hear guitars all throughout the song, and its very prominent at its climax. The track which may have talked about the real beauty, and feeling inadequate on one's personal appearance followed their social issues awareness as heard from "Waterfalls". It became TLC's fourth number 1, and second off "Fanmail" album. The song is also a "global" hit reaching the top 10.
This is basically a pop rock song, and it coincided when pop rock is becoming the thing then after Avril Lavigne rose to superstardom. But the song is not recorded to follow the trend as it was recorded before Avril became popular. This track about being heartbroken, and the wanting of freedom from pain was just moderately successful, which at that time, Lisa Lopes already died. T-boz and Chilli went on for the release of this song.
