Latin music is doing very well at the moment through reggaeton, and in fact, one of the longest running number 1 hits on Billboard is Latin pop under the name of "Despacito". There goes Luis Fonsi, J Balvin, Maluma, and others "reincarnate" Latin music in a moder way. Music genre trends come and go, and Latin music has become a trend back then too.
The previous era when Latin pop has become very popular was way back in 1999. Even non-Latin artists incorporated the sound in their music. So here are some of the Latin artists achieving success in 1999:
Ricky Martin was already successful in 1998 with his album "Vuelve", and hits such as "Maria", and "Cup of Life". But his self-titled album in 1999 made him a bigger star, and his peak year after the hit "Livin' La Vida Loca". His success declined after "Sound Loaded" album though.
After her acting success as "Selena", Jennifer Lopez found music success starting from 1999. She might have a dominant R&B sound on her debut album "On The 6", but Latin sound is still on the record. Her peak though was in 2001 and 2002 with more hip-hop and R&B sound.
Enrique Iglesias is already successful before 1999, but his global fame came that year through the hit "Bailamos". His peak came in 2001-2002 via his second English album "Escape", and the hit "Hero". During the last 10 years, Enrique remained one of the top Latin artists with continual success.
Just like the other Latin singers, Marc Anthony was already known Latin music atmosphere, but he also joined the ranks of the artists above for the Latin music movement in 1999. He achieved success that year with his single "I Need to Know", which continued through 2000 with his hit "You Sang to Me". Marc Anthony is still active until today.
