Annual Trip to My Favourite Restaurant, The Old Convent.

in tasteem •  last year

So I won quite a bit of money on a sports bet recently so I thought how best to spend money that was not expected than to visit our favourite restaurant. So we only go to the Old Convent on special occasions, sometimes twice per year or on the changing of the menu. We live around 30 minutes drive from the restaurant but only found out about it from a consultant friend of ours that loves her food. She told us that there was a restaurant down near us that was getting excellent reviews from restauranteurs in Dublin. We couldn't believe that we did not know about this place but when we went there , we could not get over the quality of the food. We have since been there 4 times and each time has never disappointed.
So tonight we went there again. Eight Course Meal. Bring it on!! I was starving. This is a restaurant for foodies. It is a tasting menu so no choice. I like it this way. So here is the menu for tonight.

8 course. Two starters, A fish course, a sorbet, a main and two desserts. €75 per person which is unbelievable value considering the quality of the food. The Old Convent opens on Friday and Saturday and does one sitting per night.
So let's have a look at the first course
Irish artisan salad, Thornhill duck, comfrey cottage micro herbs & flowers, Macroom Ricotta, Traas cherries and pinenuts.
Traas is a local apple farm near home that do plums and cherries and all kinds of local produce.

This was delicious. Everything blended well together and the cherries did not overwhelm the dish as they were not that strong in flavour. The pinenuts really did bring the dish on.

What a dish to start with. The second dish was the Brocolli and lovage veloute with hazelnut oil and a cheddar bun. I told my wife I was looking forward to this the least but it turned out the one of my favourites.

The hazelnut oil really made the dish and the broccoli veloute wasone of the tastiest I have ever had. The cheddar bun went well with it also.
10 out of 10 so far.

Next up was the halibut with pearl barley and black truffle. I had halibut before and it was nice but nothing like this.

This was the first real filler. The halibut was meaty and tasted great. I loved the pearl barley and the truffle. Just a great dish. The lime sorbet was up next. Simple dish. I am not a fan of cucumber but the dish complemented perfectly which I found surprising. The dish looked like a work of art.

Next onto the main event. The beef. I chose pink because I always have the beef that way. The beef was beautiful of course.
So we were nice and full at this stage but there were still 2 desserts to go. 2 works of art. The first was plums with lemon curd. Probably the nicest looking dish of the evening. The second to finish us off was the choclate pudding. Both works of art presented excellently.

I am not going to eat again for two days I think. This is another 10 out of ten right here. And I have ate in Michelin star places but nowhere is as good as here. The restaurant has two chefs who run the restaurant and work all day to prepare for the evening beginning with making the bread at 7am in the morning. You can tell the amount of work that goes into these dishes.

So 8 courses. Each as nice as each other. What a night and a great way to spend an evening with your other half. The meal was topped off with tea's and coffe's and marshmallows. Most people stay the night in the Convent but we got collected. Overall great company , delicious food and well worth it. We will be back here by the end of the year!

Oh, it all looks so beautifully delicious! A fantastic way to spend unexpected money!

Holy smokes sir blanchy! I remember that place, it's amazing again. Of course I have no idea what some of the food is but I'd love to try it! What do you mean they only have one sitting each night? and I didn't know a restaurant could survive by only being open two days a week. What do they do the rest of the time?
